The expedition’s members, as well as the Native American tribes they met, used birch bark for a variety of essential purposes, including:
- Canoes – Lightweight and waterproof, birch bark was commonly used for canoes, making river travel more efficient. Many of the tribes Lewis and Clark encountered, such as the Ojibwe and the Mandan, built birchbark canoes that were far superior to those of European design.
- Fire-starting – Birch bark is highly flammable, even when wet, making it an invaluable resource for starting fires in the unpredictable wilderness.
- Writing & Communication – The smooth, papery texture of birch bark made it a natural medium for sketching maps and taking notes.
- Medicinal Uses – Indigenous peoples used birch for its medicinal properties, treating wounds, fevers, and infections with various parts of the tree.
